Every inhabited island in the Azores has an airport. For trip planning, the airport code is often more useful than the full airport name because flight searches, baggage tags and schedules commonly use the three-letter code.
Azores airports by island
| Island | Airport | Code | Island group |
|---|---|---|---|
| São Miguel | João Paulo II Airport | PDL | Eastern |
| Santa Maria | Santa Maria Airport | SMA | Eastern |
| Terceira | Lajes Airport | TER | Central |
| Graciosa | Graciosa Airport | GRW | Central |
| São Jorge | São Jorge Airport | SJZ | Central |
| Pico | Pico Airport | PIX | Central |
| Faial | Horta Airport | HOR | Central |
| Flores | Flores Airport | FLW | Western |
| Corvo | Corvo Airport | CVU | Western |
Which airport should you use?
There is no single correct airport for every trip. A São Miguel-focused vacation naturally begins at PDL, while a Central Group itinerary may make TER, PIX or HOR more convenient depending on the flight pattern. A multi-island trip should be built around the schedule that minimizes unnecessary backtracking.
One-island trip
Use the airport serving the island you are staying on and keep the arrival day simple.
Two-island trip
Compare both the international gateway and the inter-island leg before committing to the sequence.
Central Group trip
Look at TER, PIX and HOR together with ferry options rather than treating one airport as the automatic gateway.
Western Group trip
Give the final international connection more margin because alternative departures can be limited.
Airport code and island name are not always the same
Horta Airport serves Faial, Lajes Airport serves Terceira and João Paulo II Airport serves São Miguel. When comparing flights, search by the three-letter airport code as well as the island name so you know exactly where the itinerary begins and ends.
Plan the airport-to-hotel transfer too
Airport arrival is only the first part of the ground journey. Decide in advance whether you are collecting a rental car, using a taxi or transfer, or staying somewhere walkable enough that a car can wait until the next day.
On a late arrival, simplifying the first evening can be more useful than forcing a rental-car pickup and long scenic drive into the same travel day.
Smaller airports deserve more schedule margin
On smaller islands, a schedule change can have a larger effect because there may be fewer alternative departures. Keep important international connections and nonrefundable commitments in mind when deciding how tightly to sequence the last days of an island-hopping trip.
Planning principle
If your international flight is irreplaceable, consider spending the final night on the same island as that departure rather than depending on a weather-sensitive connection that morning.
