7 Days in the Azores

One week works beautifully as an in-depth one-island trip or a carefully paced two-island combination.

A week is the first trip length where you have a real choice: stay on one island and travel slowly, or combine two islands when the transportation is simple and the second island adds something genuinely different.

Three strong ways to use one week

Option 1: São Miguel in depth

Spend the entire week on São Miguel. Use Ponta Delgada for part of the stay, then consider a few nights closer to Furnas or another part of the island. A full week creates room for weather changes, hiking, thermal bathing, whale watching and slower regional days without constant driving.

Option 2: São Miguel + Terceira

This is one of the clearest first multi-island pairings. A practical framework is roughly four nights on São Miguel and three on Terceira. The first island brings crater lakes and geothermal scenery; the second adds Angra do Heroísmo, volcanic caves and a stronger historic-cultural dimension.

Option 3: Pico + Faial

Travelers prioritizing the Central Group can combine Pico and Faial. The short channel between the islands makes the pairing geographically coherent, while the mountain, vineyards, Horta and Capelinhos keep the experience varied.

When a different pairing makes sense

Terceira can also anchor the whole week for travelers who value history and local culture. São Jorge can be paired with Pico or Faial when ferry schedules support the route and hiking is a priority. Santa Maria can complement São Miguel for travelers who want a quieter Eastern Group contrast.

Avoid choosing two islands only because both are famous. The best pairings reduce transfer friction and create a clear contrast in scenery, culture or activity.

Plan the transfer before the hotels

For a two-island week, verify the actual flight or ferry pattern before committing to accommodation dates. Seasonal schedules, operating days and weather can determine whether a pairing feels easy or awkward.

Keep the transfer day intentionally light. Treat it as a change-of-base day with perhaps one nearby activity after arrival rather than planning two major sightseeing regions around the connection. Read the inter-island flights and ferries guide →

Good to know for a seven-day trip

  • One island is not a compromise. A week on São Miguel or Terceira can be richer than a rushed two-island checklist.
  • If you choose two islands, make the second one count. Look for a different landscape, culture or activity mix.
  • Avoid one-night island stays. They magnify the cost of every transfer and leave almost no weather flexibility.
  • Protect the final departure. Whenever practical, end on the island that gives you the cleanest onward flight arrangement.
