Azores Airports
There are three international airports in Azores; The Lajes air field located in Praia da Vitoira, Terceira island, the Joao Paulo II airport located in Ponta Delgada, Sao Miguel island and the Santa Maria international airport located in Santa Maria island. Lajes air field is also home to an United States air force base. Ponta Delgada receives more than 95% of scheduled international flights, while Terceira is scaled mostly in the summer. Santa Maria serves as a backup air field for emergency and refueling services, as well as servicing charter and private flights crossing the Atlantic ocean.
National Airports
National flights from Lisbon, Porto and Madeira land mostly in Ponta Delgada. Faial and Terceira receive mostly TAP Air Portugal flights. Pico is used seasonally. Currently there are no scheduled national flights to Pico. SATA and TAP had the monopoly of regular scheduled flights between the mainland, Madeira and Portugal. However this year Easyjet and Ryanair the two low cost European tigers will start flying to Ponta Delgada and Terceira.
Regional Airports
Every Azores island has an airport including Corvo. Daily connections are maintained by SATA Air Azores.
